The four year program includes courses covering all periods and genres of
literatures written in English with the combination of Linguistics, as well as
offerings in translated versions of Irish and Russian writers. Goals for the
English major are that students will |
- Develop skills for analyzing individual texts
- Develop an understanding of the American and British literary traditions and
those of other literatures in English where possible
- Relate texts to the social, cultural, and historical contexts in which they
were produced
- Extend, deepen, and refine critical thinking, research and writing skills,
particularly the ability to write about literary and other texts
- Write a thesis/ project in which they initiate and complete specialized
research addressing a significant question in literature or Linguistics

The two year long program provides graduate training in literatures
written in English, Ranging from full courses on British and American and
offerings in linguistics. Goals for the M.A. are as follows |
- Students will gain advanced knowledge of the British and American literary
traditions
- Students will relate texts to the social, cultural, and historical contexts
in which they were produced
- Students will extend, deepen, and refine critical thinking, research and
writing skills, particularly the ability to write about literary and other texts
- Students will be able to write a thesis or project in which they initiate and
complete specialized research addressing a significant question in literature or
Linguistics
